Celebrating life

.... And no aged person is granted [additional] life nor is his lifespan lessened but that it is in a register (in the Lauh Mahfuz). Indeed, that for Allah is easy. [Noble Quran 35:11]

I received a surprise birthday cake late morning. Its a rich chocolate cake with lots of fruits decorated on top. Well, first of all it was not really a surprise because I know it is my birthdate, that day some eons ago... (hahah as the number gets larger, you tend to keep it low).

Talking about birthdays, people tend to wish you... for 'a long life', when in actual fact our age in this world is already fixed (only Allah knows). We should dua for a life blessed with happiness, Barakah and Rahmah.... Forgiveness and Mercy of Allah.

So, life is short... lets make full use of it and get as much Hassanah as we can!

A Memorable Eid pt.2

And I did not Create the jinn and humans except they should worship Me.

[Noble Quran 51:56]

1st Syawal 2010

I didn't catch up with the local news but as a result of the night's flood, we discovered that quite a number of our neighbors' house had to be closed. First Syawal was spent with families and friends draining off excess water and cleaning off dirt that came with it. Some threw off their carpets and rugs. One villager just bought a set of furniture that were destroyed by the rain. Morning feast for Eid celebration by a family (this was an annual thing) had to be cancelled as water entered their house. Another friend that lived by the hillside took one of the worse hit. The landslide caused a tree to fall and the kitchen wall crumbled under pressure.

The morning of 1st Syawal also sees family paying respect to the deceased. Family members went to the muslim cemetary to read Du'a for the deceased... That morning was to be a different sort of visit. Families were shocked to find that the cemetary located by the hillside suffered a landslide. Some tombstones were either washed away and buried in sand. Gone were the exact locations and markings of family member's burial site.

the area used to be full of tombstones... mostly old wooden ones that got washed away
All these happenings left me thinking. Allah did not create things for foolish reasons. Allah want us to think and learn from whatever that Allah wills. To the family of the deceased, do not be sad, for Allah is the best of protectors. Allah will take care of them in Barzakh. The tombstones is for us to remember them and what is important is our Du'a for them. Its is also to remind us that one of these days, it will be our time to join them (in Barzakh). No matter where they are, even if the graves are missing, they are well in Allah's protection, insyaAllah.

Wishing you, Allah's Blessings

A Memorable Eid pt.1

29th Ramadhan 2010
6.00 pm

As our family gathered by the dining table in the kitchen waiting for iftar (to break our fast), it started to rain. The downpour did not seem to bother anyone, yet. our family gathered, my two bothers, brother-in-law, three cousins, and three sisters, both our parents gathered to celebrate what might be the last iftar of Ramadhan, 1431. Everyone was anxious to hear the result from the moon sightings. This Ramadhan meant a lot to my brother, sisters and cousin, as we managed to read the quran and complete it together (khatam al-Quran) just a few days before Ramadhan ends. Alhamdulillah.

After the special announcement, I started to panic. Aidlfitri is tomorrow and I havent even bought my tablecloth! I glanced at the torn plastic edges that have been gracing the dining table for two years now (it was still in acceptable condition the year before). Its time to get a new one!

8.30 pm
It was still raining.... heavily. Off we go braving the heavy rain, past the traffic light down the main road to town centre. The road was already starting to flood. Water gushed and pushed its way from higher to lower grounds. Vehicles slowed down to a stop and it seemed that no cars dared to pass through. We took a u-turn to the highway instead. Obviously everyone did their shopping at the eleventh hour! The roads flooded everywhere. Supermarket blocks located on lower grounds and those close to the river were already a foot underwater. Unsuspecting shoppers were forced to wade through the knee-deep current to higher grounds... and some were forced to leave their cars to the fate of the rising water level.

We went to another supermarket that were fortunate to evade the raging flood...the continuous rain hadn't obviously dampened our spirits... to do last minute shopping for tomorrow's celebration.

Upon reaching home, our roads carried the heavy torrents of water into our front lawns and filling up drains. I walked home in the rain (from my cousins' house because I had not been out in the rain for quite a while). The cold wind on my face as I wade through ankle-deep water.

Our dining area was a bit slippery as some water splashed through the windows and onto the ceramic tiles. Alhamdulillah, we removed the carpet a few days before. Apart from that, we were saved from the raging water.

‘Ya Allah, let the rain fall around us and not upon us, (let it fall) on the pastures, hills, valleys and the roots of trees.

That night till about 3am... I was preoccupied with my last-minute eid preparation that I forgot about the rain.

....to be continued

When it comes to shopping

One of my male cousins told her sister that he urgently need to shop for a pair of jeans. Her sister, who at that time was preoccupied with housework, responded with a nod. "Yeah, I also need to get several meters of tablecloths. So, to cut the story short... they went off shopping at one of the local supermarkets.

Her brother, who already had a list in his mind, set off directly to the men's clothing department and hunts for his pair of jeans. now, where were we... owh yeah, the sister should be targeting for tableclothes. She knew exactly where to go.

Taking the longest route, she went through the food aisle - paused to look at some fresh vegetables and fruits. She couldn't resist picking up and smelling the fruits, "maybe some for later", she said to herself. Making a U-turn at the shelves full of stationery, she was distracted by the colorful set of pens and pencils that she would have added to her shopping basket. She remembered that she bought several pens from a bookstore just the day before.

From the stationery to the hardware and kitchen utensils... she went through every piece of clothing on display... and those items 'dumped' and 'disheveled' on the shelves... obviously everyone had been digging through the stack. Suddenly, she looked at her watch.... and panicked.

She walked hurriedly passed several more racks and found the tablecloth that she need. She looked at the price and paused to think, "Maybe I should survey and compare the price at another shop". After about half an hour, she came out of the shop and found her brother waiting for her... (restless, serious and impatient) and with his new pair of jeans! "Can we go already?"

Injured

My bandaged thumb!

Observe the fingernail...

Friday, 24th Ramadhan 1431H

I stacked the fragrant Pandan leaves to about an inch high and sliced through it. The sharp thin blade easily cut through the layers and I could smell the fragrance polluting the smallish kitchen. I did this (with some tinge of pride) while observing my cousins and sister struggled to cut the leaves... "hey, let the expert do this," I gestured.

I curled my fingers (as a kitchen expert would when cutting stuff)... but forgetting the thumb. And off course, you can guess what happens next... with the same force i used to cut through the leaves, I accidentally cut into my thumbnail and into the flesh (halfway!).

Blood gushed out and the pain was unbearable. Luckily I did not faint. I suddenly remembered what was in my heart... forgive me for forgetting you, Ya Allah.

26th Ramadhan 1431

Work is work.
And life went on pause goes on.
It doesn't stop just because you got injured... no, it's nothing like that.

And working without a thumb is not so much fun... It is such a challenge.
Praise be to Allah, that have created human.
Our Khaliq.
The Best of creators.
